Konjunktiv II expresses wishes, polite requests and unreal conditions. Common forms are wäre, hätte, könnte, müsste. For many verbs, German uses würde + infinitive.
For unreal past situations, use hätte/wäre + past participle: Wenn ich früher gekommen wäre, hätte ich den Zug erreicht.
