A2 German Grammar: Separable Verbs

Learn word order with common separable German verbs in statements and questions.

Explanation

Read first, then practise

Separable verbs

Many German verbs contain a prefix that moves to the end of a main clause: Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. In questions, the conjugated verb comes first and the prefix stays at the end: Wann stehst du auf?

With a modal verb, the complete infinitive stays together: Ich muss früh aufstehen.
